Me Marie-Josée Corriveau, Partner


Qualifications

Having obtained her Law degree from Université de Montréal in 1984, Ms. Marie-Josée Corriveau was called to the Québec Bar in 1986. She also holds, since 2000, a superior degree in Health Law from Université de Sherbrooke. She joined our Montreal firm in 1994 after eight years of private practice in a municipal law firm. She became a partner in 1995.

Skills

Litigation in public and municipal law as well as civil and commercial litigation are predominant in her practice. She also works as a mediator in civil, commercial and family domains. Having developed an expertise in professional law, she is called upon to represent professional corporations in penal suits in matters of illegal exercise and usurpation of title.

Ms. Corriveau represented many municipalities and public bodies in matters of zoning and subdivision, access to information, call for bids and challenging election. She represented many persons and companies in litigations concerning many businesses sectors (conflict between shareholders, unfair competition, defamation and invasion of privacy, succession, construction real estate law, breach of contract, literary and artistic property, etc.).

She also represented an aboriginal community in constitutional litigations against the provincial and federal governments. She represented the Québec Bar and the Chambre des notaires du Québec in the case of a request for a declaratory judgment against the Ministère du Revenu du Québec about illegal practice of the legal and notarial professions as well as the Régie
régionale de la santé et des services sociaux de la Montérégie in the case of a major pursuit for damages for using a piece of software which determines the required services for customers losing autonomy in health establishments.

Involvements

Ms. Corriveau gave conferences on psychological harassment in the workplace and about rights and recourses in mental health. She also teaches the Tribunal School class to second year students at Université de Montréal. Ms. Corriveau published different articles in the municipal magazine Le Carrefour. She is a member of the Bar Indemnification Fund. She has been Vice-president of the Board of directors of Insertec Angus, a social rehabilitation society.
